Bob and I have been traveling a lot this month and there will be more traveling. The first week of March we will be in Billings for Bob’s gigs with wonderful pianist Josh Nelson, Scott Jeppesen, and Roxanne Jeppesen. Plus more gigs with fantastic Billings musicians. It will be superb music events!

MSU JAZZ ENSEMBLES CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH WITH SOUL, FUNK AND JAZZ CONCERT FEB. 24
In celebration of Black History Month, the Montana State University School of Music Jazz Workshop Band and One O’Clock Jazz Ensemble will perform a concert of soul, funk and fusion jazz Feb. 24 in Reynolds Recital Hall, preceded by an introduction by educator Godfrey Saunders.
The performance, which will begin at 7:30 p.m., will feature compositions from across the genre and will range from old funk to new school acid jazz. Works by George Clinton and P Funk, James Brown, Herbie Hancock and more will be performed. Grammy-winning musician Ryan Matzinger, MSU jazz professor, directs the jazz ensembles. Saunders, the superintendent of Belgrade Schools and former Bozeman High School principal, will give a special introduction and remarks. Saunders, who grew up in the segregated Jim Crow South, was the first person in his family to graduate from an integrated school system. He went on to attend Western Montana College on a basketball scholarship and worked his way up through the Bozeman school system to eventually hold the position of principal from 1997 to 2009.

SWING FROM SCRATCH
THE EAGLES ON SUNDAY NIGHT
Swing From Scratch is a six week 101 beginner lesson series for those interested in learning East Coast Swing or Lindy Hop.
Swing is a versatile partner dance done to classic swing-era music, rockabilly, blues, and many other types of dance music.
In the class we will cover the 6-count patterns, basic closed-position and open-position as well as a many spins and turns! This 101 Swing course will give you the fundamentals you need to be confident on the dance floor. Later on we will offer a Swing 102 class that will build on these fundamental skills. No partner required.
Lesson is from 6pm to 7pm. After the lesson grab a drink and dance to live music. The Bridger Mountain Big Band plays ever Sunday at 7pm! Lessons are for all ages but you must be 21+ or accompanied by an adult to attend the Big Band.

Billings-born Kristin Korb has developed a world-wide reputation for her clever arrangements of jazz standards that she sings while playing upright bass. With several CD’s under her belt, including one on the prestigious Telarc label with The Ray Brown Trio, she now lives in Europe but in early March will tour Montana with guitarist Craig Hall and pianist Erik Olson.
