FROM BOB BOWMAN

September 16th we lost  a true musical giant in George(Jiri) Mraz. He was not only an amazing bassist, but a kind and extremely observant human being with a quick-witted sense of humor that was  pretty much unmatched. I followed him on the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. He was a small man, but his shoes were big ones to fill. I had to grow up quickly at age 23 and still trying. My audition with Thad and Mel was playing the Monday at the Village Vanguard, which continues to this day from 1965(I think) under the name of the Vanguard Orchestra, since both Thad and Mel passed decades ago. George came into the Vanguard that night and said to Mel about me “I like this guy better than the others you’ve tried.” A recommendation I carry close to my heart and he didn’t have say that. He sat in and played up a storm. When I went back and  played my bass(same one I’ve been playing for 50 years) it sounded better and all the notes were in the right place.

I would go to hear George every chance I had at Bradley’s in NYC when it was the musicians hang. Everybody was there from Cedar Walton to McCoy Tyner. George Mraz was playing with George Shearing and at the end of the night, Bradley, the owner and somwhat of a pianist himself, asked Shearing, who was  blind, about some chords he was playing and without a moment’s hesitation, George Mraz says in his Czech accent “Ive seen many things since I’ve come to America. I’ve seen the deaf leading the blind, but this is the first time I’ve seen the blind leading the deah.” Apparently to rib Bradley. Missing you and everything about you, Jiri.
