Bob Bowman shared a message about jazz saxophonist and flautist Jerry Dodgion who passed away recently.
I had the great fortune to play with Jerry Dodgion for several years. Sadly, Jerry recently passed. I played with him mostly with the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra. Amazing person and musician. One of the sweetest, swingin’ and kindest human beings to walk this planet.
One of my fondest memories other than music of Jerry was when we were in Europe 1976, and we were in Munich for 7 weeks and recorded “Live in Munich at the Domicile”. My first recording btw. He was the lead alto player and we had Sundays off and he and I, Thad and sometimes others would spend the afternoon in various beer gardens. They would start telling stories and I was in heaven, but I didn’t utter a word. Another memory was at the North Sea Jazz Festivals having lunch with Jerry, Thad, and Count Basie and both Stan Getz and John Scofield stopped by to say hello. Basie had all of us in stitches. I was 23!
